Male pattern hair loss has been a chief concern for many years. In order to counter this problem successfully, Merck & Co. developed Propecia; it has been approved for consumption by the FDA to work as an effective defense against male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia), increase hair re-growth as well as prevent further hair loss. This drug has not been approved for use in women.
Propeciais available as a 1mg finasteride pill and it is the only prescription pill that treats male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). Finasteride, the active ingredient in this drug, acts on the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This medication helps prevent further hair loss, increases hair growth, as well as blocks the formation of DHT (the male hormone responsible for hair loss); this gives the hair follicles a chance to recover and re-grow.
It has been shown in clinical studies to grow hair in roughly 50% of the men after one year and in 66% of the men after two years as well as prevent further hair loss in about 86% of the men.
Working of Propecia
Propecia finasteride belongs to a group of medicines called 5 alpha reductase inhibitors. It works by blocking the enzyme, Type II 5 alpha-reductase; in doing so it reduces the level of the hormone in the scalp which reduces the hair growth cycle and allows hairs to revert to their normal growth cycle. As a result, it effectively stops further hair loss and increases new hair growth in men suffering from male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). You can see results with this drug, if it is used for 3-6 months continuously; sometimes it may even take longer. Also you must remember that the positive effects of finasteride are reversed within 6-12 months of discontinuing the treatment; so continuous use is recommended to sustain the benefits.
Who should not take Propecia?
Propecia finasteride should not be taken by:
- People who have not been prescribed this medication by their doctors
- Pregnant women should refrain from using this medication as finasteride can cause abnormalities in the male foetus; women who are or may be pregnant should not touch broken or crushed finasteride tablets
- Breast feeding women should not use this drug as it is not known whether finasteride passes into breast milk
- Children and adolescents; it is not recommended for use in this age group
- People who are allergic to the ingredients in Propecia
- Men who are already taking ‘Proscar’ (finasteride 5mg) or any other 5a-reductase inhibitor drug
What are the dosages of Propecia?
Propecia 1mg is a tan octagonal tablet that is indicated for use in men only. Finasteride is available in a pill form and must be ingested orally. Propecia dosage is usually taken once a day with or without food. You must take your Propecia dosage around the same time each day exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less of your Propecia dosage or take it more often than prescribed. Continue to take it even if you feel well. Do not stop taking it without talking to your doctor. Increasing your Propecia dosage could cause side effects and lowering dose would make the medication less effective.

People often conjure up an image of a woman who is beautiful with long tresses. Men’s hair is often ignored and there is a greater stress on women’s hair. It is this conception that has lead to the feeling of insecurity and lack of confidence in females who have bad hair problems and baldness. Pattern baldness in females is known as alopecia. Change in the normal hair cycle causes your hair to fall out. Telogen effluvium or stress alopecia often occurs when lot of hair follicles go into the telogen phase. Stress causes this condition and results in stress alopecia.
A sudden change in hormonal levels, drop in estrogen may usually result in hair fall. After a child birth, estrogen levels go down which contributes to hair fall. The delivery of the placenta reduces the levels of pregnancy hormones and results in female hair loss. Fever, especially typhoid and other surgeries may also be a contributing factor. Birth control pills which are often taken by women if discontinued may cause problems. If a female has undergone a hormone replacement therapy to treat some disease then this adds up to your hair problems. Dearth of protein and iron in your body results in hair loss. Chemotherapy used to treat cancer and radiation therapy is quite powerful and causes hair fall and if this therapy is prolonged it may result in baldness. Diabetes and thyroid conditions are also the culprits for hair fall in female.
Women hair loss treatment:
Do not use hair products which claim they are the best in treating female hair loss without consulting a hair specialist. Provillus and Minoxidil are safe to use as they are FDA approved and contains natural herbs such as saw palmetto.
Resort to natural treatment which has long lasting effects. Saw palmetto, nettle roots and other herbs help to allay hair problems. Nettle root is a herbal medicine used over several years and has holistic effect. Estrogen hormone ingestion can bring about a positive change in female hair growth. Whether you have a small amount of thinning hair or complete baldness, grafting and other hair restoration treatment can help you. Hair Replacement from reliable surgeons can treat thinning of hair and allay hair fall problems too. Laser hair transplantation is an advanced hair fall treatment and is used to have good results. It makes your hair look real and have more permanent results. However, these advanced hair therapies are expensive.

Male pattern hair loss, medically known as androgenic alopecia, is the most common type of baldness millions of men experience. It does not happen overnight; it may take you 2-5 years to notice that half of your scalp hair is gone. While there is no complete cure, you can prevent your head from balding with proper and timely treatment. Talking of treatment and there is Propecia finasteride – one of the most sought after FDA-approved medicines to prevent androgenic alopecia and in some cases, to stimulate new hair growth. You can buy Propecia online from the comfort of your home and stop losing your locks to this genetic and hormonally induced condition.
Your baldness in depth
Every day you lose up to 100 hair daily out of 100,000 to 150,100 hair strands. This hair fall is normal as every two to six years, the hair finishes its growth and resting cycle and reaches its shedding phase. The reason men suffering from male pattern baldness lose more hair than normal is that their follicles become sensitive to a hormone commonly known as DHT. This hormone is medically known as dihydrotestosterone. When your hair follicles become sensitive because of age, hormonal changes or any other factors, you experience hair loss.
How to keep the follicles alive
If you know how to keep your hair follicles alive, you are well on the road to stop male pattern hair loss from occurring. One prescription medication, Propecia, which contains a chemical ingredient known as finasteride can help to avoid further shrinking of hair follicles because of DHT and can also help in reviving hair follicles that have already shrunk. Finasteride basically inhibits the level of DHT and help in stopping hair loss and in hair re-growth.
Spot the pattern
Unless and until you don’t know if your hair loss is because of male pattern baldness or some other reason, there are less chances of you seeking a treatment. Therefore, the first step is to understand the pattern of your hair loss. If you see bald spots in the middle part of your head and then from the crown and the sides, eventually which might lead to or has already led to an ‘M’ or horseshoe shaped bald area – you are suffering male pattern baldness. It is advisable to start treatment well before the ‘M’ shape is formed.
Sometimes, DHT is not solely to be blamed for your hair loss. It can also be genetic in nature. Most scientists agree that hair loss in inherited from mother’s side of the family, though it has not been established.
Propecia at rescue
The good thing about Propecia is that it can not only help you to stop further hair loss but also reverse it. More than 90% men have experienced benefits and claimed that their hair loss is stopped within just a couple of months. 60% men have claimed to see new hair growth where they had totally lost hope. This drug is not only very effective but also safe with only 2% men saying they experienced side effects. These side effects too are not very serious and reversible in nature.
